ISWAP Attacks Borno Military Base as Nigerian Troops Kill Over 25 Terrorists

ISWAP ATTACKS BORNO MILITARY BASE OVER 25 TERRORISTS KILLED

ISWAP Attacks Borno Military Base as Nigerian Troops Fight Back

KUKAWA, BORNO STATE — A tense night in Kukawa, Borno State, turned into a fierce battle after suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched a coordinated attack on a Nigerian military base.

The attackers reportedly targeted the 101 Special Forces Battalion, opening fire from different directions in an attempt to overwhelm the troops stationed at the base.

But the soldiers fought back.

According to the Nigerian Army, the attack came from four different directions, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai responded, with support from the Air Component of the operation.

By the time the fighting subsided, the military said more than 25 terrorists had been neutralised.

The Army also reported recovering several weapons from the battlefield, including six AK-47 rifles, while troops continued searching the area for additional weapons and fleeing fighters.

Soldiers Also Lost Their Lives

While the military successfully repelled the assault, the victory came at a painful cost.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that some of its personnel were killed during the confrontation and paid tribute to the fallen soldiers.

The exact number of military casualties has not been officially announced by the Army. However, the Associated Press reported that a senior military officer, who spoke anonymously, said 10 Nigerian soldiers were killed.

The difference between the official statement and the reported figure means the final casualty count may become clearer when authorities complete their assessment.

A Battle That Lasted for Hours

Reports indicate that the attack occurred on Tuesday night, with the fighting lasting for several hours.

For residents in the area, the sound of gunfire would have been a frightening reminder that the security situation in parts of northeastern Nigeria remains fragile.

ISWAP has continued to operate around the Lake Chad region, using attacks on military positions as part of its campaign against Nigerian security forces.

The choice of a military base as a target also shows the level of confidence the attackers continue to have in carrying out coordinated operations.

However, the response from Nigerian troops appears to have prevented the attackers from achieving their objective.

Weapons Recovered as Troops Pursue Fleeing Fighters

Following the battle, soldiers began clearing and securing the area.

The Army said troops recovered weapons from the terrorists and continued operations to locate fighters who escaped after the attack.

Military authorities are also expected to review the circumstances surrounding the assault, including how the attackers approached the base and how troops responded.

Such assessments are important because attacks on military formations can expose weaknesses in defence and intelligence systems.

More Than Just Another Attack

For many Nigerians, news of another battle in Borno may sound like just another headline. But behind every number are soldiers, families and communities dealing with the consequences of the conflict.

The soldiers who lost their lives will leave behind families waiting for them to return home. Communities around the affected areas must also continue living with the uncertainty created by recurring attacks.

At the same time, the military's claim of more than 25 terrorists neutralised represents a significant battlefield setback for ISWAP.

The coming days will therefore be important as security forces continue operations in the area and authorities provide more information about the incident.

For now, one thing is clear: the battle in Kukawa was more than a midnight exchange of gunfire. It was another major test of Nigeria's fight against terrorism in the northeast — and one that came with a heavy human cost.
